Dried Red Fruits, Grape, and Green Apple
Costa Rican coffee. Located near Costa Rica’s Turrialba Volcano, Aquiares is a historic coffee estate renowned for its commitment to quality and sustainability. Established in 1890 by British farmers, it is now managed by three families dedicated to modern, sustainable agriculture. Covering 924 hectares, 80% of which are shaded Arabica plantations, Aquiares is the largest continuous coffee farm in Costa Rica.
The estate’s name, meaning “land between rivers” in the indigenous Huetar language, reflects its picturesque location between the Aquiares and Turrialba rivers. Rich in history, the region was once a center of Huetar civilization, with artifacts occasionally discovered among the coffee trees.
Under the management of Don Alfonso since 1992, Aquiares has prioritized social well-being. Its initiatives include empowering workers to own their homes and fostering community development. Today, only 15% of local residents work on the estate, while many pursue a variety of other careers.
Aquiares manages the entire coffee production chain, ensuring the highest standards of quality and traceability. Under the leadership of Diego Robelo, innovations include experimenting with new coffee varieties to adapt to climate change and pests.
From seedling to cup, Aquiares coffee embodies excellence, sustainability, and community empowerment.
Our specialty coffee comes from Aquiares, where the “Esperanza” variety thrives — a blend of Caturra and Ethiopia 531 that delivers exceptional cup quality for both filter coffee and espresso. Grown at elevations above 1,200 meters, this variety consistently produces outstanding coffee beans.
Hand-picked by skilled harvesters, each cherry is carefully selected over up to seven passes to ensure optimal ripeness. Our workers, who come from the Aquiares community and surrounding areas, benefit from fair wages, safe working conditions, and access to amenities such as on-site housing and healthcare.
At our wet mill, the cherries undergo meticulous processing, including a unique anaerobic washed method that results in a distinctive fruity flavor profile.
Slow-dried over 4–5 days and aged for two months, our coffee promises unmatched freshness and flavor.
